Tormach Fab Lab: Using a 2-Jaw Chuck

Although not nearly as common as 3- or 4- Jaw chucks, a 2-Jaw Chuck can be quite handy for certain 4th Axis jobs. The jaws on a 2-Jaw chuck are opposite each other and they are driven by a scroll plate, just like the jaws on a 3-Jaw chuck. They are typically used in two scenarios:

  • Rapid Prototyping - for example, cutting a 3D shape out of a block of plastic or wood with a single 4th axis operation using a ball end mill.
  • Holding odd parts - In this case, they are often used with custom soft jaws milled for that purpose

One of the main purposes of a 2-jaw chuck is in clamping irregularly shaped objects firmly. Unlike a 3-jaw chuck, which is generally used for round and hexagonal stock, the 2-jaw chuck is utilized when holding unusual or non-cylindrical shapes. Therefore, machining tasks that demand this particular feature often rely on the functionalities of a 2-jaw chuck, allowing for more creative and flexible setups.

Additional Uses of a Two-Jaw Chuck

The 2-jaw chuck, while less common, is often the solution for specialized applications. Let's go through some additional uses:

Holding Irregular Objects

When dealing with irregularly shaped objects, especially in prototyping or automotive industries, a 2-jaw chuck can provide the necessary clamping force without deforming the object. This feature makes it indispensable for 4th Axis setups.

Expanded Clamping Capability

Custom soft jaws can be milled specifically for the part being held. This versatility means that users aren't limited by the standard jaw configurations but can adapt the chuck to better fit their specific needs.
