Buying Guide: What To Know About Deck and Patio Tiles

Spring has sprung, and with patio season quickly approaching, many homeowners are starting to think about how they can best enjoy their outdoor living spaces. While some home projects require special conditions, installing deck and patio tiles can happen at any time of the year.

Goto Okler to know more.

When it comes to designing or revamping your outdoor space, deck and patio interlocking tiles are an excellent choice. Many can provide a durable, slip-resistant surface that is easy to maintain and offers additional comfort over many other deck and patio flooring options, such as wood, composite, concrete, or asphalt.

In this blog, we look at two different types of deck and patio interlocking tiles: polypropylene SnapGRID® LX interlocking deck tiles and rubber GorillaSHOCK tiles. While very different from one another, both options have benefits and features to enhance any outdoor space.

SnapGRID® LX interlocking deck & patio tiles:

  • Withstands UV Exposure

Extensive exposure to UV rays can result in premature fading of your deck&#;s paint. SnapGRID® LX interlocking deck tiles are designed to withstand exposure to the sun and excessive use. This protects your patio floor underneath from harmful UV rays and prolongs the life of your deck boards.

  • Slip-Resistant Surface

Outdoor tiles aren&#;t limited to your deck and patio. They are perfect for pool decks, outdoor showers, and around your hot tub or jacuzzi. The slip-resistant and the self-draining surface provide added safety and traction for potentially hazardous areas.

  • Added Comfort and Relief

SnapGRID&#; LX interlocking deck tiles add comfort and relief to feet, legs, and back. This makes patio tiles ideal for grilling and cooking outdoors on surfaces over concrete, paving stones, or wood decking.

  • Easy to Install

Unlike some outdoor flooring installations, deck and patio interlocking tiles are easy to snap together and can be configured to suit any space. The interlocking tiles are a great solution for cracked surfaces and unsightly floors.

  • Portable and Easy to Clean

Going camping for the weekend? Outdoor deck and patio tiles can be taken apart, transported, and installed over any smooth surface. Once you&#;re done, the perforated design can be hosed down and will easily drain away dirt. The durable material can withstand continuous disassembly and reassembly without breaking.

  • Versatile Designs

Patio tiles come in full-colour options to suit the aesthetics of any outdoor living space. Should you change the colour and design of your deck, these tiles can be easily interchanged to match.

  • Suits Any Outdoor Space

Deck and patio tiles are an economical and comfortable addition to any outdoor living space. These cushioned and durable surfaces are designed for multi-purpose use and can be installed any day of the year.

GorillaSHOCK rubber interlocking patio & deck tiles:

  • Comfort & Safety

Outdoor rubber tiles have anti-fatigue and shock absorption properties and are slip-resistant even when wet. Our GatorSHOCK rubber deck and patio tiles are soft and comfortable underfoot, providing a safe and comfortable outdoor surface for entertaining, relaxing, or for your kids to play on. Rubbers inherent shock absorption helps reduce the risk of injuries from falls, providing peace of mind for parents, facility managers, and homeowners alike.

  • Durable & Weather Resistant

More traditional surfaces like stone, brick, and concrete can crack or chip and can also become uneven, creating a tripping hazard. Rubber patio tiles are durable, long-lasting, and designed to withstand heavy impact, heavy traffic, and outdoor environments. Rubber surfaces are non-porous, which prevents water absorption and helps prevent the growth of mould and mildew.

  • Easy to Install & Low Maintenance

Rubber deck tiles are easy to install; they can be laid directly over a smooth surface, such as concrete or wood, or over a compact crushed rock base. Our GorillaSHOCK tiles make installation even easier with their unique interlocking x-connector system. Clean rubber outdoor flooring with a water hose, leaf blower or broom. Unlike other traditional outdoor surfaces such as wood and concrete, there is no need to seal, stain or paint your rubber tile, meaning you can spend more time enjoying your surface and less time maintaining it.

Pros & Cons of Using Interlocking Deck Tiles on Your Balcony

Interlocking deck tiles have become very popular in recent years and for a good reason: they can really transform a balcony or a terrace elevating the space from zero to hero in minutes.

The process of buying my first apartment was not smooth at all: the delivery date was pushed back so many times that I can&#;t even remember.

I also encountered other problems: they initially installed the heating boiler in the living room instead of the kitchen (it&#;s an open space) or they didn&#;t waterproof properly the terrace above me and it leaked on the new wood flooring so everything had to be changed.

Therefore when I noticed they also did a botched job when installing the flooring on my balcony I simply didn&#;t have the strength for further discussions with them. I just wanted to move already and thought to myself: &#;I&#;m going to figure something up and it will end up looking ok&#;.

And this is where the interlocking deck tiles have come to my rescue! But while covering an ugly floor it&#;s not their only advantage, I will admit they also have a few cons.

So read on to find out what are, in my opinion, the main pros and cons of using this type of decking on your balcony.

Pros (+)

They look really stylish

There&#;s no denying it: these types of deck tiles look stylish and they can really elevate the look of a space.

While there are many different options on the market (some when imitating grass), I especially love the look of the wooden ones, which is what I also opted for on my balcony.

I got them from Ikea, though now most specialized stores carry interlocking deck tiles: they&#;re called Runnen and I got them in Acacia.

They can help cover a bad flooring job

If you&#;re in the same situation as I was with my balcony and you&#;re trying to mask a botch flooring job without changing the whole thing and dealing with the mess yet again, then these tiles are a great option!

It doesn&#;t matter how bad the floor looks, you&#;ll not be able to see it after laying the tiles over it.

They are really easy to install

When I say they&#;re easy to install I really mean it: I actually did it myself and I&#;m not very strong nor very good at things like this.

Basically, all you have to do is place each tile on the floor and snap it into place with the following one. It&#;s a bit like Lego building in this regard.

If some tiles were a bit stubborn and didn&#;t snap into place on the first try, I&#;d simply stand on them and that usually did it.

For corners and other tight spaces where a whole tile wouldn&#;t fit anymore, I simply cut the plastic that held the wood together with garden shears to make smaller pieces: not a very high-tech method, but hey, it worked!

I then took these pieces and arranged them to fit like in Thetris (see, it&#;s all a game:)) ).

Fair warning though: these cut bits will move since they will not be snapped into place in the same way as the whole tiles are, but personally I don&#;t mind since they&#;re usually placed really close to the wall or halfway under the furniture.

They&#;re great for renters or for someone wanting a temporary change

If you&#;re a renter and you hate the flooring on your balcony or terrace, then using interlocked deck tiles is a great way to upgrade its look without damaging or making permanent changes to it.

The same thing also applies to owners who want to make a temporary change to their space.

Cons (-)

They&#;re kinda expensive

The interlocking flooring tiles are great, but this comes with a price tag: they&#;re usually more expensive than traditional tiles, and if you have a large surface to cover it will hurt your wallet a bit.

My balcony is 7.5 sq meters (about 81 sq feet), so if I were to cover it all in Ikea Runnen tiles right now it would cost me almost 200 USD (approx 181 EUR)!

And that&#;s with the price in my home country which is around 21.4 USD (or 21 EUR) per package (1 package covers about 0.81 sq meters or 9 sq feet).

It didn&#;t actually cost me that much at the time however, and it&#;s not that the prices were lower back then. The reason is much simpler: I didn&#;t install tiles under my sofa or under my pot cabinet. If you can&#;t see the floor, no reason to make it look prettier!

I also want to point out another thing that may make you think these tiles are worth the money: you don&#;t need to pay someone to install them like you usually do with traditional ceramic tiles.

It&#;s difficult to clean underneath

Now this is my biggest complaint with them. Most people, myself included, have plants and flowers on their balconies and terraces.

That means that there are often wilted leaves, petals, and on occasion even soil that gets on the floor and invariably within the cracks between the tiles or underneath them.

Honestly, even if don&#;t have plants there will still be dust that will find its way there. And it&#;s so hard to clean!

I usually have to take the whole thing off once a year to be able to sweep the floor underneath. And that&#;s not an easy job! For maintenance in-between, I use my Dyson to vacuum what it can: petals, bits of soil, etc.

They&#;re not as resistant as regular tiles

Since most tiles are made of plastic and sometimes wood, they&#;re not as resistant as traditional flooring made from ceramic tiles or even stone.

For example, I have a few tiles where the wood has split at corners. Others seem to need to be restained (I had this deck for more than 7 years now).

My balcony is also north facing so it&#;s a bit more moist in winter. I have an area where the flooring underneath is not straight so if condensation happens, the water will stay there. Well, I had years when the wooden part of the tile had mold on it due to this reason.

Not really the tile&#;s fault, but just a thing to be aware of.
