Advantages of Gundrilling for Deep Hole Drilling
Gundrilling is a specialized method for deep hole drilling that employs a long, thin cutting tool designed to create holes with high depth-to-diameter ratios. The available tools come in three main configurations: carbide tipped, solid carbide, and indexable carbide.
What Are Gundrills?
Gundrills excel in producing long, straight holes with tight tolerances and exceptional surface finishes, all while maintaining high penetration rates. Carbide gundrills are often chosen for deeper hole drilling tasks.
A gundrill distinguishes itself from a standard twist drill through its unique head geometry. The standard gundrill features a single effective cutting edge that efficiently removes chips as it penetrates the workpiece. This process allows drilling through depths unattainable by conventional machinery, such as twist drills. The use of high-pressure coolant ensures clean chip removal, even at extreme depths.
These deep hole drilling tools maintain precise tolerances, generate burr-free holes, and adhere to exact specifications. Additionally, gundrilling operations create accurate and repeatable holes with superior surface finishes, potentially eliminating the necessity for multiple secondary or finishing operations.
Gundrills easily integrate with CNC machining centers, lathes, and milling machines, making them a cost-effective option for both small and large shops with diverse production requirements.
Gundrill Configurations
Solid carbide gundrills provide high performance, reliable processing, and extended tool life by minimizing torsional vibration and increasing rigidity.
Indexable carbide gundrills come with advantages such as extended tool life through full coating and an indexable design with treated edges. This design reduces downtime by enabling quick replacements of worn components, making them versatile for use on machining centers, deep hole machines, and lathes.
Gundrills are available in both single-flute and two-flute configurations. Two-flute gundrills are typically the optimal choice for drilling aluminum or cast iron, as they can operate at twice the penetration rate of single flutes. In the single flute gundrilling process, coolant is delivered through a hole in the tool, exiting together with chips from the V-shaped groove on the drill tube.
Benefits of Gundrilling
- Superior cutting performance;
- Minimal centerline deviation;
- Exceptional drilling quality (surface and tolerance);
- High process reliability facilitated by trouble-free chip removal;
- Compatibility with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL).
