Swimming is a beloved activity to do with your baby, and it can indeed be a lot of fun! However, getting your baby ready for the pool (and leaving the pool) is a test of patience. The days of leisurely preparing for the pool, having a quick shower, and relaxing after your swim are gone. When you take your baby swimming, it's a process. Luckily for you, I've done this many times and have some tips to share.
Essential Items for Baby's First Swim
Swim Diapers
Most pools require all children under three years of age to wear a swim diaper and a plastic pant. Even if your child is potty trained, a swim diaper is crucial. Swim diapers are designed to catch poop, not to absorb pee, so don't dress your baby in them ahead of time. Otherwise, you'll arrive at the pool with a wet baby and car seat. Whether you choose disposable or reusable cloth swim diapers, they won't absorb pee. If you're interested in reusable options, Bumbini Cloth Diaper Company offers a great selection.
Plastic Pants
Every baby in a swim diaper should also wear a plastic pant. This is especially important if you're using a reusable cloth swim diaper. Plastic pants act as an extra layer of protection against fecal contamination. Pools that require plastic pants usually sell them for less than $10, and they can be reused. Although most swim instructors may not check every baby, using a plastic pant is a responsible precaution. Fecal contamination can result in the pool being drained, sanitized, refilled, and reheated, making the pool cold for the next swim. Protect against this by always using a plastic pant over your baby's swim diaper.
Other Essentials
Besides swim diapers and plastic pants, you'll need several other items. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes for a quick change. Don't forget to pack underwear for yourself. If you’re breastfeeding, bring breast pads. Also, pack a towel for both you and the baby. Although you won't likely get to use your towel, it will come in handy to place your baby on once their towel is too wet. If your baby can stand, bring sandals for them and flip-flops for yourself. Consider bringing a lock for the locker or renting one. Another helpful item is a baby swim sun protection suit, though this is optional.
Don’t forget to bring a hairbrush and hair elastic for yourself. Pack a reusable wet bag for all wet items, and most importantly, a clean diaper for your baby!
The Swimming Class Routine
Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early. Since you'll already be in your swimsuit, start by getting yourself ready. If your pool has wall-mounted baby seats or playpens, use them; if not, consider using your baby's infant bucket seat or placing them on a towel on the floor.
After you're ready, get your baby into their swim gear. With around 16 moms and 16 babies in close quarters, finding a spot on the bench might be tough. When it's almost time for class, give baby a quick shower and head to the pool deck. Ideally, you want to time it so you enter the pool just as the instructor invites everyone in.
After the Swim
After class, shower again and try to secure a spot on the bench. Dry off and dress your baby first. If you have long hair, squeeze out any excess water before handling your baby to avoid dripping on them. Once your baby is dressed, hang them up if you can and dry yourself. Use a reusable wet bag for your wet items. Pat yourself on the back—you successfully took your baby swimming!
