We generally think of wires of a size from 8 AWG (American Wire Gauge) and higher as â&#;œheavy wireâ&#; though it is not a measure of weight necessarily (though the lower gauges get heavier as they go down). You do need to utilize different equipment to process the larger wire sizes. AWG is backwards to people not in the wire industry in that the lower the AWG, the larger the wire size. Other larger sizes can be made as well, but are less common.

Many utilize a large wire gauge (see Heavy Wire Assemblies), but not all heavy wire assemblies are battery cables, though they are very similar depending upon application. We use several different types of material called braiding yarn that is woven onto almost any assembly and it can be customized through color or degree of protected needed.
